HCIL faculty members Marshini Chetty and Tammy Clegg have received a Google Faculty Research Award to study children’s mental models of online safety on mobile devices.

Chetty and Clegg have received this award in support of their project Keeping Kids Safe: Understanding Kids’ Mental Models Of Online Safety on Mobile Devices. Google’s Faculty Research Awards are intended to support scholars who are doing cutting-edge work in areas relevant to Google’s own research.

Marshini Chetty (left) is an Assistant Professor in the College of Information Studies, with an affiliate appointment in the Department of Computer Science. In addition to her work with the HCIL, where she is the director of the NetCHI Lab, she is also a member of University of Maryland’s Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS) and the Maryland Cybersecurity Center.

Tamara Clegg (right) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership in the College of Education, with a joint appointment in the College of Information Studies. Her research focuses on life-relevant learning and is one of the principle investigators of the National Science Foundation grant project Science Everywhere, as well as Kitchen Chemistry.
